5 Ways to Spruce Up Outside Your Home

Though most of the cleaning focus is inside the home, sometimes we should go to our front and back yards and give them the extra attention they deserve.

But I’m not here to tell you about regular yardwork and maintenance like mowing the lawn, picking the weeds, cleaning the grill, or otherwise basic decluttering. No, I’m here to show you how to take your outdoor hosting to another level.

Here are 5 Ways to Spruce Up Outside Your Home

1. Scented Pinecones

Easily disguised as décor, scented pinecones, or other Scentsy décor items, give your guests that first wallop as they walk outside. Smell is often overlooked in the cleanliness of a home, but once you add that extra bit of flair, the compliments come pouring in.

Since scents are linked to specific feelings and memories, even just the simple whiff of cinnamon scented pinecones will get people feeling bubbly and warm like it’s the holidays. Experiment with different scents and find which one works for you and your style.

2. Lighting

Lighting comes in so many varieties which allows you endless possibilities of how to theme your outside. Want something tropical? Go with tiki torches. Want old English? Get an aged lamp post. Want something more ethereal? Get string lights.

It’s surprising how much of an effect this has on your space as the sun dips below the horizon. Lighting not only creates mood, but it allows you to see you, your guests, and your surroundings better. Be sure to look into solar lighting, as these are fairly low maintenance once installed.

3. Lawn Furniture (Including Fireplace and Storage)

Having somewhere to put your feet up outside will really set you apart from other homes. Entertaining guests is no easy task but providing a nice area to sit and enjoy the comforts of the outside while being comfortable is often overlooked.

Furniture to consider: Gazebo/Canopy, Sofas, Chairs, Tables, Storage for pillows.

It may be advantageous to create a fire pit, buy a metal fire pit, or even a stone chimenea. These create for great centerpieces and bring a slice of the outdoorsy into your home for ultimate entertaining.

4. Outdoor Games

What good is the outside if you can’t have fun while enjoying the rest of the space? Whether it be building a horseshoe toss, getting a corn hole toss, or a giant connect four there are many games that will entertain you and your guests.

Also look for: Giant Jenga, giant checkers, and Spikeball, just to name a few. Of course, the ole reliable football, basketball, and soccer balls will work just as fine too!

5. Sound

Having a great outdoor sound system that will let you pump up the jams is also a great way to level up your outdoor experience. Too often, the conversation will die down and you’ll be stuck listening to the rhythmic beat of your neighbors dog barking and an annoyingly loud cricket.

It doesn’t have to be anything extravagant to be effective, a wireless waterproof speaker placed in the center of the action will do everything you need to keep a party’s life alive.

Bonus: Don’t forget the actual outdoors.

Let’s break down that ambiguous statement. As much as we’re trying to make the outside as comfy and relaxed as possible, it’s important to remember you are, in fact, outside. Embrace that, and plant some flowers, start your own garden, have a pond, or a fountain. A bird feeder, a bath, let not just your friends feel welcome but nature as well.

Clearly there was a lot in here to unpack and you may be thinking, “I don’t have enough space” or “I don’t have the budget for that.” My advice is this, don’t focus on making your home the epicenter of perfection. Focus on making the small changes that makes your home and outside more attractive to you.

After all you are the one living in it.
